ISLAMABAD: The law secretary on Wednesday informed the Supreme Court of Pakistan that a summary has been submitted to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat with regard to extension of Accountability Judge Muhammad Bashir’s tenure.

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar was hearing the notice of government’s failure to extend the tenure of the judge, who is hearing the graft references against former PM Nawaz Sharif and his family members in the accountability court.

Judge Bashir has been conducting the graft proceedings against Sharifs after the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed three graft references against former premier Nawaz Sharif and his family members in September last year, besides one against then-finance minister Ishaq Dar in compliance with the top court’s landmark July 28 verdict.

The three-year tenure of Judge Bashir will coming to an end on March 13. He was appointed as the accountability court judge back in 2012 and received an extension of three-year on recommendation of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in 2015.

During the court proceedings today, the law secretary said that the summary for an extension has been forwarded and assured the CJP that the summary would be approved within few days.

Justice Nisar then directed him to inform about the latest developments over the issue on March 10.
