ISLAMABAD: The federal government on Thursday approved a summary, requesting for three-year extension of Accountability Judge Muhammad Bashir’s tenure.

Judge Muhammad Bashir has been conducting the graft proceedings of the references filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) against former premier Nawaz Sharif and his family members, besides a reference against former finance minister Ishaq Dar since September last year in compliance to July 28 verdict of Supreme Court of Pakistan.

According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Law, President Mamnoon Hussain has endorsed the summary for one-term extension of the judge.

According to the extended tenure Judge Muhammad Bashir will now retire on March 12, 2021.

The law secretary on Wednesday informed the Supreme Court of Pakistan that a summary had been submitted to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat with regard to extension of the judge’s tenure.

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar had previously taken notice of the government’s failure to extend the tenure of the judge, who has been hearing the graft references against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his family members in the accountability court-I.

He was appointed as the accountability court judge back in 2012 and received an extension of three-year on the recommendation of Islamabad High Court (IHC) in 2015.
