KARACHI: Police on Tuesday claimed to have detained the key accused who along with his accomplice robbed the family of 10-year old Amal the night she was killed after being hit by a bullet in a shootout between them and the police personnel in Karachi.

The police said the accused identified as Khalid along with his accomplice Shehzad robbed the family of the girl on Korangi road on the night of August 13.

In an exchange of fire with the police, Shehzad was killed while Khalid managed to escape from the crime scene. A bullet had also hit 10-year-old girl during the shootout, resulting in her death later that night at a hospital.

The accused, who is a resident of Hijrat colony, had fled in a rickshaw on that night, according to the police.

A rickshaw, mobile phone and weapon were recovered from the possession of the accused.

On August 13, a police party which was on patrol in Akhtar Colony area of Defence was informed by a couple of families that at least two armed men in a rickshaw were intercepting passersby and snatching their valuables at gunpoint.

“After some efforts, the police spotted two of the bandits [in Akhtar Colony]. As our mobile van approached them, one of them fired shots at us and the situation sparked an exchange of gunfire,” a police official told the media while adding that one of the bandits was killed and the other ran away.

However, when the guns fell silent after a few minutes, the girl — who was passing by the area in a car along with her family — was also found hit by a bullet.
