Thar suffering from hunger despite government claims

KARACHI: Sindh's Information Minister Sharjeel Memon has said that the government has declared the drought-stricken Thar region as calamity-hit area, ARY News reported on Friday. 

He said the local administration officials of Thar region have been suspended and additional supplies of wheat have been dispatched to the area. 

Contrary to the provincial government claims media reports suggest that thousands of wheat bags have been locked down in the government's godowns despite people suffering from hunger in Mithi and other areas of Tharparkar due to famine-like situation.

The people questioning the government's approach towards handling the drought conditions in desert areas of the province when people dying by hunger despite presence of huge stocks of the wheat in government warehouses. They have demanded distribution of wheat among the people immediately.

Tharparkar, desert district in east of Sindh, after prolonged drought facing a famine-like situation with reports of the deaths of several children.

Many Thari families were moving to barrage areas, along with their cattles from Diplo, Chhachhro, Islamkot and Nagarparkar, reports said.

Sindh government has declared Tharparkar a calamity-hit area but it is yet to take any concrete steps to provide relief to the people of drought hit region. 

The announcement of supplying 60,000 wheat bags to the drought-hit people of Thar is yet to materialise.
