CAPE TOWN: Libya defeated Ghana in a nerve-wracking contest after penalty shootouts on Saturday to clinch the African Nations Championship at Cape Town, ARY News reports.
None of the teams managed to score in both halves and extra time. The match went to the penalties in which Libya defeated Ghana by 4-3.
A large screen was placed in Libyan federal capital Tripoli for the occasion. A huge celebration was witnessed in different cities of Libya after the win.
It wasn’t the first time the two sides had met nut had played two matches before. Both matches ended in a 1-1 draw.
Before the final of African Nations Championship, the last time the two sides met 32 years ago in the final of a major championships, when Libya hosted the tournament. And contrary to this time, Ghana prevailed 7-6 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
