IG Islamabad directs SPs, DIGs to monitor security of polio workers

ISLAMABAD: Inspector General (IG) of Islamabad Police Amir Zulfiqar Khan on Wednesday directed all zonal superintendents of police (SPs) and DIG operations to supervise security of anti-polio teams themselves, ARY News reported.

Negligence in security of anti-polio teams will not be tolerated, Amir Zulfiqar Khan said in a statement.

The Islamabad IG police warned that action would be taken against police officers in case of committing any negligence.

On April 24, following the polio drama in Peshawar, more than 13,000 parents had denied administering anti-polio drops to their children in the drive against this crippling disease, in Punjab.

According to Coordinator Emergency Centres for Polio Elevation Program Salman Ghani, the anti-polio drive had suffered serious blow in the province as thousands of parents had refused administering anti-polio drops to their children across Punjab, in the wake of Peshawar Polio drama.

Peshawar was gripped in panic Monday morning as rumours spread like a wildfire that the anti-polio vaccine had caused children to fall ill and faint in several areas of the city.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Minister Dr Hisham Inamullah Khan on Wednesday administered polio drops to his children in front of journalists here in Peshawar.
