Asfandyar Wali Khan
Asfandyar Wali Khan, the son of a prominent Pakhtun nationalist and politician, Khan Abdul Wali Khan, was born in Shahibagh in Charsadda town of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on February 19, 1949.
He got his early education from the Jesus and Mary Convent and then from Lahore’s Aitcheson College. He holds a Bachelors degree from Peshawar University.
Hailing from a political family, he grew up in a political environment that enabled him to become a seasoned political activist and later as a leader. He began his political career as an activist in 1968 and remained as a member of Pakhtun Student Federal (PSF) and its Central Executive Committee
He was first elected to the provincial assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkwa (previously known as North West Frontier Province) in 1990. Later in 1993, he was became a member of the National Assembly. He became a MNA for a third time in his legislative career.
He again won a seat in the NA in the 1997 general election. He has also served as senator in the Upper House of Parliament in the 1997 general election.
In 2008, he was elected to the NA for a fourth time from NA-7 (Charsadda-I). He also served as chairman of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs during the tenure of the 2008-2003.
Asfandyar was jailed for 15 years by a special tribunal in Hyderabad but later on was released along with some others on 1978.
After his release, he joined National Democratic Party (NDP) – a party his father was member of.
The NDP later was proscribed by the Bhutto government in 1975 and was merged with other parties to form ANP in 1986.
The ANP chief was first elected president of the party in 1999 and has been re-elected to the position since then.
He now heads Awami National Party (ANP).
