Asia Cup: Afghanistan shocks Bangladesh with a devastating win

FATULLAH: Afghanistan, playing for the first time in the Asia Cup has defeated the Test-playing hosts Bangladesh by 32 runs at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium, Fatullah on Saturday, ARY News reported.

The Afghanistan’s bowlers maintained the intensity and produced an all-round bowling performance to shock the hosts by bowling them all out at 222 in the 48th over.

Many of Bangladesh’s batsmen got the start but none of them stayed long to take their team home; Afghanistan showed consistent bowling performance by taking wickets at regular interval of time.

Mominul Haque scored 50, Naeem Islam made 35, Nasir Hussain and Zia-ur-Rehman made 41 runs each.

Afghanistan after being invited by the Bangladesh to bat firs were in deep trouble with 90-5 at one stage.

But Asghar Stanikzai and Samiullah Shenwari added 164 for the sixth wicket in 138 balls to lift Afghanistan from 90 for 5 in the 27th over to a strong 254 against Bangladesh.

Asghar remained 10 runs short of his 100 and got out at 90 while Samiullah posted 81 runs.

Bangladesh, who took 28 matches to register their first-win against a major country, palying in their home ground were left embarrassed by a younger nation playing only its fourth match against a major team.
