Asif Ali Zardari

Asif Ali Zardari, co-chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and widower of the late former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, was born on July 25, 1955 in Karachi to a family from Nawabshah, Sindh. His father, Hakim Ali Zardari was a former industrialist, politician and chief of the Zardari tribe.

He went to the Karachi Grammar School for early education. Then, he joined Cadet College Petaro and also went to St. Patrick’s High School for a brief period. He went abroad for higher studies after graduation from Petaro in 1972.

He spent three years in prison before his release in 1993 when charges of blackmail were dropped against him.

Then, he was again imprisoned and was held in custody from 1997 to 2004 on corruption and murder charges. His imprisonment didn’t stop here, he was arrested again in December 2004 for his failure to attend a hearing in a murder trial in Karachi.

Soon after release, he departed for Dubai and returned after three years in late 2007 after Bhutto’s assassination in a political rally on 27th December, 2007 at Liaquat Bagh, Rawalpindi.

He had to spend a total of 11 years in prison for what he said politically motivated accusations. Lately, he was acquitted in the last case filed against him by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) during former president Pervez Musharraf’s era for allegedly acquiring assets through illegal means in Pakistan and abroad.

He married Benazir Bhutto on December 18, 1987 in a huge wedding ceremony in Karachi. During her first stint as prime minister, he served as a member of the National Assembly and hold the portfolios of the federal minister for environment first and then investment.

He was elected as the President of Pakistan on September 6, 2008, replacing General (retd) Pervez Musharraf.

He made history on September 8, 2013 when he became the first elected president of the county to complete his constitutional tenure and handed over duties to another democratically elected president Mamnoon Hussain.

Zardari became president of the country at a time when it was facing a number of daunting challenges, including mushrooming of militants, flagging economic, and severe political instability.

Among prominent things to his credit are initiation of Aghaaz-e-Huqqooq-e-Balochistan, seventh National Finance Corporation (NFC), the 18th constitutional amendment, surrendering of the right to dissolve the parliament as a president under Article 58 2b.
