KABUL: A strong blast hit a mosque in Kabul Monday as worshippers gathered there for a religious ceremony, leaving at least 27 dead and 35 injured, reports said.

“A blast was reported at around 1230 in police district 6 of Kabul, we are still gathering the details,” interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi earlier said.

“It was a suicide bomber who blew himself up among worshippers inside the mosque, killing 27 and wounding 35,” senior police official Fridon Obaidi said.

Officials said the attack took place at the Baqir Olum mosque in the western part of the city. Police cordoned off the area around the mosque in the west of the Afghan capital.

According to a report, a suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest after entering the Baqer-ul-Oloom mosque.

Several of the injured have been taken to hospital, local witnesses told media.
