Brazil, Croatia kick off FIFA World Cup opener tonight
Rio De Janeiro: FIFA World Cup kicks off tonight as hosts Brazil will take on Croatia in the opening match of the month long extravaganza, ARY News reports.
The match will start at 01:00 A.M. Pakistan Standard Time (PST). The fever of the FIFA World Cup is always soaring high whenever the mega event takes place. It will be the first time since 1978 that the event will be held in South America. Argentina hosted the World Cup that year. It should be noted that construction problems and death of several construction workers have marred the preparations of the World Cup.
Thirty two teams are taking place in this year’s FIFA World Cup and have been placed in eight groups. Group A comprises of Brazil, Croatia, Mexico and Cameroon whereas defending champions Spain, runners up of last World Cup Netherlands, Chile and Australia are in Group B. Group C consists of Colombia , Greece, Ivory Coast and Japan.
Group D is based on Uruguay, Costa Rica, England and Italy. Group E includes Switzerland, Ecuador, France and Honduras. Group F is based on Argentina, Bosnia Herzegovina, Iran and Nigeria. Germany, Portugal, Ghana and United States are placed in Group G while Group H makes Belgium, Algeria, Russia and South Korea. It should be noted that Brazil is one of the favorites to win the tournament this year. The hosts will be looking for their sixth World Cup victory.
