CJP takes suo moto notice of wedding halls construction at PU
LAHORE: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, on Monday, took suo motu notice of wedding halls construction within the vicinity of the University of Punjab.
A two-judge bench under the supervision of Chief Justice Saqib Nisar was hearing the case at the Lahore registry of the Supreme Court.
“On what basis have commercial construction been permitted to carry out within the vicinity of the varsity,” Chief Justice Nisar crossly questioned.
The petition was initially filed by a citizen against the commercial construction in the varsity, CJP Nisar turned the petition into a suo motu notice.
The top judge has asked Lahore Development Authority to submit a reply over the construction work.
While hearing the case of illegal appointments of vice-chancellors, the court directed the Punjab government to immediately appoint a new vice-chancellor for Punjab university.
Earlier today, the apex court gave the orders to suspend the vice-chancellor Dr Zakaria Zakar of University of Punjab.
Chief Justice Nisar also asked that why hasn’t a continuous vice-chancellor been appointed at the university in the last 2.5 years. “Please inform us who is responsible for this,” he remarked.
