ISLAMABAD: The government has in principle decided to cancel the condition, which prohibits the dual nationality holders from contesting elections, citing government sources ARY News reported on Thursday.
A constitutional amendment will be introduced in National Assembly to allow Pakistani citizens with dual nationality to contest elections, sources said.
The people having dual nationality sending hundreds of millions remittances to Pakistan, so as they should be given opportunity to have a say in national affairs by contesting elections, the government sources said.
However, the dual nationality holders will not be entitled to hold constitutional offices of the country, they added.
A number of lawmakers from national and provincial assemblies affiliated with ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, opposition Pakistan People's Party and other parties have been disqualified for holding dual nationality.
