Karachi: Death toll from toxic liquor hits 29

As many as 15 people are currently under-treatment at a hospital. Those died after consuming poisonous liquor belonged to the slum areas of Karachi including Landhi, Korangi, Bilal Colony and Zaman Town. The victims were brought to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC).

Five senior policemen had been suspended on charges of negligence in their duties. Similarly directors of excise and taxation of Hyderabad and Karachi have also been suspended.

The in-charge of JPMC Emergency Department Dr Semin Jamali had earlier confirmed the death of 18 people, caused by poisonous liquor. She further informed that heirs of three victims didn’t allow the postmortem of their beloved ones. Now the death toll has reached 29, she informed.

Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah has ordered action against the persons’ responsible and sought report of the incident.
