'Ebad requested president to reduce Mirza's penalty'

According to details, the governor had requested the president to exercise his powers under the Article 45 and reduce the punishment awarded to Saulat Mirza.

However, President Mamnoon Hussain did not agree with governor’s recommendation and turned down the mercy plea of Saulat Mirza.

On the other hand, Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad confirmed to have written the letter to president.

In his word with ARY News, he told that the letter was written after the family of Saulat Mirza approached him and appealed to write to the president for mitigating the penalty.

 

 

Ebad said that being a governor he has recommended so in various cases with an intention to help the families of the convicts on humanitarian grounds.

“Convicts have got the legal right of mercy plea, however it is the discretion of the president whether to accept it or not,” said the governor. “I forwarded my recommendation to the president in accordance with the law.”
