Economic revival top priority of President Alvi

ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi Thursday said that improvement in the lives of common man and economic revival are the priorities of the government.

He was talking to Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry, who along with Prime Minister’s Special Assistant Iftikhar Durrani and Senator Faisal Javed called on the president.

The president said all efforts will be made to improve education and health sectors. He said the tree plantation campaign should be run on war footing basis in the country.

He said the campaign launched by the prime minister and the Chief Justice of Pakistan for construction of dams is a welcome development. He reiterated he will discharge his responsibilities as president according to the constitution.

The information minister felicitated Dr Alvi on assuming the office of president He said the ministry of information will play its role for implementation of the visions of the president and the prime minister.

Meanwhile, various other dignitaries also called on President Alvi and exchanged views on matters of mutual interest including Speaker National Assembly Asad Qaiser and Speaker Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Mushtaq Ghani.

Minister of Petroleum Ghulam Sarwar Khan, Law Minister Farogh Naseem, Minister for Climate Change Malik Amin, Federal Ombudsman Tahir Shahbaz, and Attorney General Anwar Mansoor also called on the president in separate meetings.

Alvi to address joint session of parliament on Monday

President Alvi was scheduled to address a joint session of parliament today which has been postponed and has been rescheduled for Monday at 4PM.

Alvi took oath as the head of state on September 9 and was administered oath by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar.

The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) candidate Dr Arif Alvi won the presidential election held on September 4 with 352 votes, followed by PML-N backed candidate Maulana Fazlur Rehman who managed to secure 184, while Aitzaz Ahsan of the PPP bagged 124 votes.

President Alvi will become the 9th president to address the joint parliamentary session. Previously, eight presidents have addressed the parliament for a total of 27 times.

Asif Ali Zardari is the only president who had an opportunity to address the parliament for the maximum number of times which counts to six. On March 23, 1985, late president Gen. Zia-ul-Haq was the first president to address a joint session of the parliament.

Under Article 56(3) of the Constitution, the president is required to address a joint sitting of parliament at the beginning of the parliamentary year.

After being elected as president of the country, Mr Alvi stepped down from his seat in the National Assembly. Alvi has been a key confidante of Imran Khan and one of the earliest members of the PTI.
