ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued a notice to ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), seeking appointment of new party leader.

According to ECP’s notice that cites Political Parties Order 2002, “a disqualified lawmaker cannot hold any office in a political party.”

The ECP states that Article 15 of the PML-N’s own party constitution stipulates that if the seat of party president is vacant, it is to be filled within one week’s time.

The notification also mentioned the Supreme Court ruling in the Panama Papers case, in which Nawaz Sharif was formally asked to quit as prime minister.

The PML-N has been asked to effect new change and inform the election regulation body.

Below is the clause in the Political Parties Order 2002 that deals with a status of a disqualified member of Parliament.

Nawaz Sharif

Supreme Court on July 28 disqualified Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from office over undeclared assets.

Sharif hours later resigned, quashing earlier rumours of his party planning protest to voice concern over the court verdict.

The court verdict was marked a major political victory for opposition leader Imran Khan, a former cricket star who last year threatened mass street protests unless Sharif’s wealth was investigated.

Khan pounced on the leaking of the Panama Papers, which revealed Sharif’s family had bought expensive London apartments through offshore companies.
