ECP declared 16-point code of conduct for international media

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) issued a 16 point ‘code of conduct’ for international media and foreign observers for General Elections 2018 on Tuesday. 

According to the Election Commission, any violation done then granted permission to foreign observers can be cancelled.

International observers and foreign media are required to submit an affidavit to cover the general election scheduled for July 25. Also, they have been barred from including personal opinions in official reports. However, it allows assigned officials from observer organizations to pass personal comments on the election. They shall also not participate or conduct any activity that may generate an impression of favoring of opposing any political party or candidate.

The code of conduct states, “Observers shall respect the sovereignty of Pakistan as well as fundamental rights and freedom of its people.”

It is further mentioned in the code of conduct that political impartiality shall be maintained by observers and media at all costs while observing the election and shall not exhibit any bias or preference with regard to political parties and candidates as well as any issue related to the process of election.

ECP also asserted that international media persons cannot stay in the country after their visa expires.
