ISLAMABAD: While rejecting the accusation of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Fazlur Rehman, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) maintains that the General Elections 2018 were fair, transparent and impartial.
According to ECP spokesperson: “Accusations lacking evidence is deplorable and contrary to the facts. Not respecting the mandate of public without any justification is against the rules of democracy.”
The election commission spokesman stressed that the tradition of pressurising national institutions should end. “ECP is an independent institution and will not tolerate any sort of pressure,” the spokesperson responded. It has also termed Fazlur Rehman’s demand for the CEC’s resignation as ‘regrettable’.
“If anyone has reservations over the elections, he should file petition as per procedure,” maintained the ECP spokesperson.
Speaking to media in Peshawar Press Club yesterday (Sep 6), Maulana Fazlur Rehman insisted that the present government was superimposed and announced to run a campaign to “awaken” the people.
“All the parties rejected the election results unanimously. ECP has failed to hold free and fair elections therefore it has to resign immediately,” he asserted.
JUI-F chief Maulana Fazal ur Rehman suffered a major shock of his life as he was ousted by candidates of the Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) on two seats in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He contested the general elections as a candidate of MMA from two seats – NA-38 and NA-39 – in KPK, losing both against the two candidates by a fair margin.
