ISLAMABAD: With the next general elections scheduled in August this year, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will start verification of voters’ lists from today.

According to a statement issued by the ECP earlier, in first phase, the names of 73,60,279 voters will be included in the list while 9,23,947 names of those who have been registered as died in UCs and NADRA, will be removed.

In the second phase, all lists will be displayed for public review so the general public could apply for any registration or transfer.

The electoral body has also undertaken the process of delimitation of constituencies in the wake of the provisional results of 2017 census.

Addressing a presser earlier, ECP Secretary Babar Yaqoob had said the process of carrying out delimitation of constituencies will begin on January 15 and a delimitation proposal would be prepared within  45 days.

According to the provisional census results, Punjab will lose seven general and two reserved seats. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will get five more seats in the National Assembly (four general and one reserved seat), while Balochistan will get three more parliament seats (two general and one reserved seat).

Whereas, the federal territory of Islamabad will get one more general seat. However, the number of seats allocated to Sindh and Fata will remain unchanged.
