KARACHI: Apparently indignant over flouting of his powers, Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) Chief Dr Farooq Sattar served show-cause notices to 33 defiant members of Rabita Committee,  ARY News reported on Sunday.

According to sources, the notices, bearing signatures of Dr Farooq Sattar as party convener, have been served to the MQM-P coordination committee (Rabita Committee) upon violation of the party’s code of conducts.

An explanation has been sought from the members over convening the committee meeting in Sattar’s absence and writing a letter to Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The committee had earlier apprised the ECP in writing that the Rabita Committee had the authority to nominate for the upcoming Senate elections, which Sattar deemed as sheer breach of party’s constitution. However, the committee withdrew its letter to please the party chief.

The notice also seeks an unconditional apology from the defiant members of coordination committee over use of foul language at Sattar’s residence in PIB Colony.

Earlier, the MQM-P chief had extended the “deadline” till Sunday (Feb 11) for all estranged party activists and leaders to reunite under his leadership.

Sattar had then said he would also write a letter to the ECP to declare a letter of the Rabita Committee as null and void.

On the occasion, he said the Rabita Committee had stabbed him on back as it attempted to snatch away his rights after writing a letter to the ECP.

He then claimed that it’s no more a matter of a Senate ticket but a breach of the party’s constitution.

General Workers meeting today at PIB

Sattar has called a General Workers meeting today (Sunday) at 4:00 pm at his residence in PIB Colony and appealed the party workers and leaders across the province to ensure their presence in the meeting to protect the party from further splitting into factions.

In an overnight press conference on Friday, he then said: “I watched over the party after August 22, 2016, the onus is on you [workers] to come forward on February 11 to ensure its survival.”

He said he has not been deploying the “stick” which the MQM founder previously used for the leadership.

Moreover, Sattar announced to make a key decision about his leadership in the party meeting on Sunday.

Rifts persist within MQM-P

On the other hand, the Rabita Committee members have called a meeting today (Sunday) in Bahadurabad to deliberate whether to respond Sattar’s show-cause notice or not.Faisal Subzwari

Earlier, Faisal Subzwari said that the party had delegated the power to deputy convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui to issue the Senate tickets, while refuting Sattar’s claims.

Hinting at implementing the mine-one formula, Sabzwari said Sattar had disappointed the party workers through his conduct.

“It is beyond anyone’s understanding as to why a jeweler-turned-politician Kamran Tessori has become important this much to Sattar,” he asserted.

“The party will not accept any orders conflicting with the party’s principles,” he maintained.

The internal rifts within the party took another turn on Thursday, the last day for submission of the nomination papers for Senate polls, after party chief Dr Farooq Sattar and Rabita Committee members including Faisal Subzwari and Wasim Akhtar came face to face.

Emotional scenes were witnessed outside the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) office in Karachi as Subzwari broke in tears after embracing Sattar.

However, the deadlock over issuance of Senate tickets to party candidates apparently remained unresolved as both the groups, the committee members-led Bahadurabad group and Sattar-led PIB group, submitted the nomination papers separately.

The party leadership has been divided into two factions over the issuance of ticket to jeweler-turned politician Kamran Tessori ahead of Senate elections on March 3.

Who is Kamran Tessori?

Tessori is a newcomer in the party, who joined the MQM-P last year and quickly rose to prominence. He was previously a member of the Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F).

Sattar-led MQM-P has also fielded Tessori to contest PS-114 by-election in Karachi against the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) Saeed Ghani but lost by a big margin.
