13 policemen killed, 50 injured in Karachi blast

KARACHI: At least 13 policemen were killed and and over 50 injured in a powerful bomb blast near Razzaqabad Training Centre in early hours of Thursday, ARY News reported.

Contrary to initial reports, Additional IG Karachi Shahid Hayat Khan has now said it was yet to establish whether the blast was suicide attack. On the other side, SSP CID Raja Umar Khattab said it was transpired from a CCTV footage that explosives-laden vehicle came at around 7.07am and it struck the police van at 7.37am. 

The blast occurred on main National Highway near Razzaqabad training centre. SSP Malir Rao Anwar said the police van was carrying 55 cops and they were on way to their duty. 

Bomb Disposal Squad said an explosive weighing around 25 kilograms were used in the blast.

The 11 slain policemen have been identified. They include Sajid Ali, Dost ali, Yaseeen, Abdul Aleem, Gulshan, Sarfaraz, Shehzad, Abid and Mehboob Ali. Most of the victims belong to different districts of the province.

Additional IG Karachi vowed that police will continue fighting against criminals. He said the city police was persistently facing threats.

Sources told that the policemen, targeted in the blast, were heading to Bilawal House for duty.

A passenger bus passing by the police training center was also affected by the blast.

Police mobile near the blast site was also completely damaged.                                                   

The injured persons were shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.
