PARIS: Roger Federer of Switzerland and Serena Williams of the United States started their French Open campaign on a positive note after winning their matches on Sunday, ARY News reports.
The second grand slam of the year French Open kicked off in Paris yesterday.
Federer defeated Slovakia's Lukas Lacko in 6-2 6-4 6-2 straight sets to qualify for the second round.
Jo Wilfred Tsonga of France beat compatriot Roger Wilson 7-6 7-5 and 6-2.
In the women's singles, Williams sisters qualified for the second round after winning their matches.
Serena Williams overpowered France's Alize Lim 6-2 6-1 whereas Venus Williams thrashed Swiss Blenda Bencic 6-4 6-1 to make it to the 2nd round of the grand slam.
