KARACHI: Amid presence of large crowd and workers of various political parties, the funeral prayers of 11 ill-fated drowning victims were offered at a ground adjacent to Bab-ul-Islam mosque here in North Karachi, ARY News reported on Sunday.

Heart-wrenching scenes were witnessed earlier today when the bodies had arrived in the locality.

All deceased belong to a single family who died of drowning at Karachi’s Hawke’s Bay beach yesterday.

According to rescue and law enforcement agencies, the picnickers drowned in the sea while they were trying to rescue one and another. Rescue services were initially able to recover nine bodies while two others were recovered later in the evening.

Sources said that at least 35 lifeguards were absent from duty, caused hindrances in rescue operations.

It merits to mention here that in May, the provincial government had imposed a ban on swimming at Karachi’s beaches for six months.

The provincial government had then notified that a ban was  imposed on wading through, swimming and diving in the sea at the beaches of Karachi for the next six months under Section 144 of the CrPC.

Last month, three Saudi nationals died after drowning at the same beach.

Karachi witnesses a significant number of drowning incidents in the summer season, when picnickers swarm at the beaches to beat the soaring temperatures in the city.
