Gen Hameed Gul dies of brain hemorrhage

According to details, Hameed Gul was in Murree that he suffered hemorrhage stroke, following which he was immediately shifted to a hospital.

However, Gen Gul could not sustain the deadly stroke.

Family sources of Gen Hameed Gul have confirmed his demise and summoned his close associates to Murree.

Gul headed Pakistan’s premier spy agency – the ISI – from 1987 to 1989, he was replaced as DG ISI by the then PM Benazir Bhutto.

His last rites will be held in Rawalpindi’s Race Course Ground after the Asr prayers today.

Biography:

General (Retd.) Hameed Gul was born in in Sargodha on 20th Novemember 1936. He acquired as his early education from his home town of Sargodha.
Gul joined Pakistan Army in 1954 and he was commissioned in the army in 1956.
He was a tank commander in the 1965 war against India and was awarded the prestigious Sitara-e-Jurat awar for his bravery on the battle field.
He also served as a battalion commander from 1972 to 1976 after which Pakistan Army in 1978 promoted him to the rank of brigadier.
Gul became the First Armoured Division Multan Corp’s Commander in 1980 and also served as martial law administrator in Bahawalpur.
Gen Gul was the Director General of ISI chief from 1987 and 1989 where he played a key part in the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. It was stated that the US had sent him a piece of the Berlin Wall as a memorablia.
Gul, while serving as ISI chief, provided assistance to the Afghan groups fighting the Soviet forces in cooperation with US’ Central Intelligence Agency.

Time Magazine reported that the former DG ISI had an extensive role in providing support to Kashmiri nationalist groups that are battling India.

 He retired from service in 1992.
In an interview to one of local news channels, Gul labeled politicians in the country as corrupt and at the same time claimed responsibility for forming Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI).
