COVID-19 infections reach 475 after 18 new cases emerge in GB

GILGIT: Eighteen more cases of coronavirus emerged in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), taking the tally to 475, according to the health department’s statistics on Tuesday.

The number of active COVID-19 cases reached 140 in GB, whereas, four patients lost lives due to the virus.

Earlier on Monday, Chief Minister Gilgit Baltistan Hafeezur Rehman had said that they demanded the federal government to provide Rs 2 billion to fulfil their operational expenditures incurred while dealing with coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking regarding reopening of schools in the region, the chief minister said that any decision on reopening of schools would be made on the advisory of the health ministry after July 15.

“We will forward recommendations to the federal government regarding promotion of students in the next classes,” he said.

Hafeezur Rehman further announced that the GB government would pay 20 per cent fees of students from low-income group. “30 per cent of the fee will be paid by the parents while remaining 50 per cent will be compensated by the concerned school,” the chief minister said.
