HEC stops admissions to MPhil, PhD programmes in Punjab University

LAHORE: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has stopped admissions to the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes in the University of Punjab, ARY News reported on Tuesday.

The spokesperson for the Punjab University said the decision to stop admissions was taken viewing lack of numbers of qualified teachers. The HEC has decided to stop admissions after visiting different faculties.

An order has been issued to stop admissions at 28 PhD and 33 MPhil programmes. PhD programmes have been stopped at Political Science, International Relations and Pakistan Studies. While, MPhil programmes have been stopped at Arts and Design, History, Chemistry and Mathematics.

2090 students are enrolled in 28 PhD programmes and 5598 students are enrolled in 33 MPhil programmes. While, 488 PhD faculty members are present for PhD and MPhil programmes.

Sources said students were being supervised by teachers of irrelevant departments by overlooking HEC rules regarding Phd and MPhil programmes.

According to the HEC rules, three doctorate faculty members are must for PhD proramme and two doctorate faculty members for MPhil programme.

Sources said degrees will not be attested until HEC rules were implemented.

Vice Chancellor University of Punjab Prof Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar said admissions would not be granted to those who did not qualify on the standard. He said PhD and MPhil programme at the university would be standardised.
