MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday announced cash award for the national team for emerging triumphant in the Test series against Australia.
The team members will be awarded with Rs 50 Lakh each while coach Anil Kumble will receive Rs 25 Lakh, and the support staff Rs 15 Lakh each.
The BCCI congratulated the Indian cricket team for retaining the No. 1 position in Test team rankings and registering unbeaten series wins in the home season 2016-17.
India defeated Australia by eight wickets in the fourth and final Test at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium here. The host beat the Aussies 2-1.
But there is more to this series win that just being sitting at the helm. India are all set to grab an amount of US $1 million prize cheque provided by the ICC April 1 cut-off date.
Australia captain Steve Smith said his team gave a good account of themselves even if they could not win the series.
“I’m proud of the way we’ve been able to turn things around and really compete in these conditions. I know coming over here, I said it a few times, we’re being written off, we’d lose 4-0 and all that kind of stuff,” Smith said.
“But the way we’ve been out here competing in each and every test match, it’s been great to be part of a fantastic series.”
The series is likely to be remembered equally for the top quality cricket it served and the acrimony that surrounded it.
Kohli took the post-match news conference by surprise when he announced that his off-the-field friendship with the Australian cricketers was over.
