ISLAMABAD: The Interior Ministry on Saturday received the resignation of lead prosecutor, Muhammad Akram Sheikh, in the high treason Musharraf case.

On July 31, prosecution head Mohammad Akram Sheikh had tendered his resignation in the treason case against ex president and chief of army staff general (r) Pervez Musharraf.

He has apparently resigned from the case because of personal reasons. A new prosecutor will be appointed by the new government. Akram Sheik was made the lead prosecutor in Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s  (PML-N) tenure.

In his resignation, Akram Sheikh stated, “The newly-elected government may choose to continue with the prosecution of the case and appoint a counsel of its own liking.”

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has scheduled the hearing of the case on 20th August.

In the past, the PTI chief had assured to initiate proceedings against Musharraf for his ‘unconstitutional’ measures. Also, some of Musharraf’s close aides have also joined PTI. Furthermore, a main member of Musharraf’s party, Dr Amjad had also withdrawn his nomination papers in favor of Imran Khan in NA-53.

Recently, the apex court summoned Musharraf, who has been staying in Dubai since 2016, but he didn’t show up.
