ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb on Thursday said that a bill for welfare and protection of journalists would be presented before the cabinet for approval next week.

“The bill envisages the establishment of a welfare fund for the correspondents in which government and the media owners will equally contribute,” she said while speaking at the meeting of Senate’s Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting chaired by Senator Kamil Ali Agha in Islamabad.

Media ban in Dar graft trial, leaves journalists puzzled

She said the proposed bill had been prepared in consultation with the relevant stakeholders soon we will be able to see our correspondents in protection.

Members of the standing committee appreciated the effort put in by the minister of state for framing of the proposed bill for journalists.

This should be noted that journalists take risks to uncover stories for the public which sometimes go fatal. Mostly war reporters are at great risk, but the same risks often apply equally to local correspondents covering topics that someone finds threatening.
