KARACHI: Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar on Saturday showered praise over the Sindh government for the state of cleanliness in Karachi, saying there has been improvement in the metropolis credit of which goes to the provincial government.

The chief justice, who headed a larger bench of the apex court, was hearing a case pertaining to the water and sanitation woes of the city at its Karachi registry.

Petitioner Shahab Usto said Karachi is heavily deficient in water as it faces a shortage of 260 million gallons of water every day, which is likely to be eased by the end of this year.

He said new schemes with regard to provision of potable water to denizens are being executed under supervision of the Supreme Court-appointed water commission.

Justice Nisar said monsoon rains are coming and asked what is the condition of storm water drains which he said were clogged with trash.

At this, Mayor Waseem Akhtar said work to clean drains is underway at fast pace and the situation is getting better.

The chief justice granted one-month time to the mayor to clean the storm water drains and warned of stringent action upon failure to comply with court orders.
