Karachi: Journalist among three wounded in blasphemy protest
Law enforcement agencies opened fire at the activists of Islami Jamiat Talba (IJT), the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), as they started marching towards the French Consulate to protest against the blasphemous caricatures published by French magazine Charlie Hebdo.
A photographer of a foreign news agency identified as Asif Hassan was injured in the clash. He received a gunshot in chest while performing his professional responsibilities.
Hassan was rushed to Jinnah Hospital for medical attendance. After a surgery the injured pressman said to be out of danger. Dr. Seemi Jamali of the hospital has said that Asif Hassan’s condition is stable and he is being kept under observation at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Police also used water canon to stop the protesters from moving to the diplomatic mission.
Additional contingents of the law enforcement agencies have been deployed to control the situation.
