Karachi’s top cop forms team to probe man’s death in police custody

KARACHI: Additional inspector general (AIG) Karachi Ameer Sheikh has constituted an investigation team over death of a citizen, who was the president of Gadani ship-breaking workers union, during police custody, ARY News reported Monday.

The team will be headed by the director general Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and will consist of three members.

Babu Karim Jan, died under mysterious circumstances in Karachi on Sunday morning, soon after being arrested by police from his residence in Metroville, located in the city’s SITE area.

Police claimed that Jan, who was in his late 60s, was wanted in two attempted murder cases and died after suffering a “heart attack”.

According to the deceased’s relatives, Iqbal Market police conducted a raid in Metroville at around 1:30am and detained Karim Jan and his son, Amin.

The AIG also visited the family of the deceased and offered condolence with his heirs. He said it was negligence on part of the police and vowed to investigate the case to the core.

He warned of action against anyone found involved in the incident. The city police chief said cops would no more visit anyone during fortnight without complete proofs.

We have a few flaws in the system which would be eradicated soon, he added.

On Sunday evening, the relatives and community members held a protest outside the Karachi Press Club.
