Karachi: Senior police officer among 4 killed in suicide attack
KARACHI: At least four people including former SHO Shafiq Tanoli were killed and over 15 injured in a heavy explosion near old Sabzi Mandi area, ARY News reported.
Top CID officer Raja Umar Khattab confirmed it was a suicide blast. "The suicide bomber walked up to the shop where Tanoli was passing and exploded himself," he told the media, adding the attacker was aged between 20 and 25.
The injured persons also include two cops, identified as Saleem and Asif.
Tanoli had survived a bomb blast some months ago, wherein more than five people were slain at the same location.
Brother of the slain cop blamed police for not providing security to Tanoli.
The latest incident occurred within the jurisdiction of PIB Police Station.
The explosion went off near the residence of Shafiq Tanoli, who was said to be a potential target of terrorists.
Rescue and security teams reached the spot. Police cordoned off the area to collect evidences from the spot.
The explosion was so loud that it was heard to a long distance. Governor Sindh has taken notice of the blast and sought report from inspector general Sindh.
Slain former SHO of Mawach Goth, was demoted and suspended from his post recently after he allegedly carried out an illegal raid in Clifton area.
On December 20, 2013, Tanoli had survived a assassination attempt. A suicide bomber approached his vehicle near his residence in Old Sabzi Mandi when Tanoli sensed the danger and quickly jumped off his vehicle, thus saving his life.
