KARACHI: Karachi Development Authority (KDA) has claimed Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is illegally managing charged parking in KDA areas, as fight over power begins between the two big entities of the megapolis after separation.

Director KDA Nasir Abbas said only KDA was entitled to receive money from 41 schemes and their adjacent areas. He also claimed that Civic Center was also a property of KDA.

Civic Center had been headquarters of KMC after merger of both the organizations until revival of KDA recently. KMC has shifted most of its offices back to its old headquarters.

On the other hand, KMC spokesman said it was not doing any unlawful activity, but KDA was planning to do it by managing charged parkings.

“KDA’s only job is to develop schemes and handover them to KMC. They are not entitled to collect any utility taxes/ charges,” he said.

The spokesman said if KDA was to receive money for charged parking from all the schemes, then it should do all the other works as well including maintenance of street lights and arteries.

“According to the constitution, KDA is not entitled to receive charges for parking,” he said.

Sources said KMC was earning over Rs60 million a year from 42 legal charged parkings across the city.

“The fight is not actually over legal charged parking, but the illegal ones. There are over 200 illegal charged parkings in the city. These charged parkings generate over Rs50 million a month,” they said.
