Khorasani to lead new Taliban faction after split in TTP

PESHAWAR: Banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has suffered a major split as a faction of militants has announced formation of a new group Jamaatul Ahrar, ARY News reported on Tuesday.

Maulana Qasim Omar Khorasani has been named to lead the new faction of Taliban militants.

TTP, a coalition of Taliban groups, has suffered a major split as Taliban of Orakzai Agency, Bajaur, Mohmand and Khyber tribal regions and Ahrar-ul-Hind will join the new group of the militants, sources said.

The emir of Jamaatul Ahrar, Omar Qasim Khorasani has urged all factions of Tehreek-i-Taliban to join the new group of Taliban.

Khorasani, in a statement, has said that the leadership of Tehreek-i-Taliban always remained a victim of personal and narrow objectives and highlighted the need of unity in the ranks.

He said a separate group was announced after the efforts to keep TTP united ended in failure.
