ISLAMABAD: Defence Minister Khurram Dastgir on Friday was assigned the portfolio of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He will look after the issues concerning the foreign affairs ministry till the end of the current government’s five-year term.

The office of the foreign minister fell vacant after disqualification of Khawaja Asif at the hands of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) for concealing his UAE work permit.

Dastgir has been serving as the minister of defence since August 2017 when Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s new cabinet was sworn in after ouster of former premier Quaid Nawaz Sharif in July last year.

On April 26, Asif was disqualified under Article 62 (1)(f) of the Constitution for non-disclosure of his employment in a UAE company and monthly salary in his nomination papers over a petition filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Usman Dar, by IHC’s larger bench comprising Justice Athar Minallah, Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani .
