The imposition of Essential Services Act prevents doctors and other health workers from going on strike at public hospitals in the province.

In case of violation of the act, the workers will be liable to face prison term for as long as one year, fine and dismissal from service.

KP Minister for Health, Shehram Tarkai said the enforcement of Essential Services Act will benefit everyone, adding, “A few people are protesting for the sake of their own interests”.

The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf-led provincial government imposed the act after Health Employees Council called for a strike on Tuesday.

It is pertinent to note here that Tehreek-i-Insaf has been opposing enforcement of the same act by the central government in case of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).
