Kulsoom Nawaz laid to rest at Jati Umra
LAHORE: Begum Kulsoom Nawaz – wife of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif – was laid to rest near the graves of her father-in-law, Mian Sharif and brother-in-law Abbas Sharif in Lahore on Friday.
Renowned Islamic scholar Tariq Jameel offered the funeral prayers in Sharif Medical City adjacent to the Sharif family’s residence in Jati Umrah, Raiwind. The former first lady passed away on September 11 in London after a prolonged illness.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supreme leader Nawaz Sharif, son-in-law Captain (retired) Safdar, party president Shehbaz Sharif along with a huge number of PML-N leaders and supporters attended the event.
Delegations from other political parties including the PPP, the MQM-P and PSP reached Lahore to attend the funeral.
A government delegation comprising Chief Minister Punjab Usman Buzdar, Governor Punjab Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar and National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaisar also made it to Sharif family’s Jati Umra residence to attend the funeral and burial ceremony.
The flight carrying Kulsoom Nawaz’s casket landed at Allama Iqbal International Airport, Lahore in wee hours on Friday after a short ceremony and funeral prayers in London.
Shehbaz Sharif, Asma Nawaz, and ten other members of the Sharif family accompanied the coffin on the flight (PK 758) to Lahore. Sons of Hussain Nawaz have also come along with the body of their grandmother.
The political career of the former first lady remains far from any controversy, unlike embroilment of her family members in different cases.
Born into a Kashmiri family in Lahore, she attended Islamia College and Foreman Christian College University for her graduation. Kulsoom was married to Nawaz Sharif, with whom she has four children. Kulsoom Nawaz served as the President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) from 1999 to 2002.
