DUBAI: Sunil Narine spun Lahore Qalandars to beat Karachi Kings by three runs in a Super Over and stop their rivals from entering the play-offs of Pakistan Super League (PSL) season three in Dubai on Sunday.

Lahore Qalandars made 11 runs in Mohammad Amir’s Super Over but Karachi Kings could manage just eight in the over bowled by Sunil Narine as the tension finally ended late in the night.

The regulation match ended in a dramatic fashion as — Lahore needing 16 to win in the last over — youngster Sohail Akhtar smashed a boundary and a six before he was caught at long on boundary off the second last ball but as Karachi Kings players celebrated the win, umpires declared that Shinwari had overstepped.

Lahore contested that Sohail had completed a single they needed to win but umpires declared that when the catch was taken by Ravi Bopara the ball was dead and no run was allowed.

Sohail then took single to equal the scores but in an attempt for a second run Gulraiz Sadaf was run out. Sohail remained not out with eight-ball 15.

Agha Salman notched 45-ball 50 with four boundaries and a six to set Lahore on the track but they were always behind the required run rate. When Salman was out in the 18th over, Lahore still needed 26 runs.

Karachi Kings were lifted to 163-5 by Babar Azam who made 49-ball 61 with six boundaries and a six while Lendl Simmons scored 39-ball 55 with eight boundaries and a six after Lahore put their opponents in a flat batting strip.

Karachi Kings were given the platform by Babar and Simmons as they added 72 for the second wicket after Joe Denly, the highest scorer of the last match, was out for just three, with the score at 19.

Babar could have been dismissed on the first ball but Shaheen Afridi dropped an easy chance off a miscued pull off a luckless Yasir Shah. Babar took full advantage of the lapse and completed his third half century in this year’s PSL.

Karachi Kings had a lean period between 11-15th over as they managed just 25 runs and only hit a boundary after 43 balls. That hurt their good total, which showed 89-1 after 10 overs.

Babar was finally dismissed in the penultimate over, caught at the boundary off Sohail Khan who finished with 3-34.

Shahid Afridi lasted just two balls but hit a six to give crowd something to cheer.

After a day’s rest on Monday, the league shifts to Sharjah where Islamabad will take on Multan Sultans on Tuesday.
