Lakhra power plant can generate cheaper electricity: Senate told

ISLAMABAD: Convener of the Senate sub-committee on power, Senator Nauman Wazir Khattak, has said that Lakhra coal power plant can generate electricity at a cost of Rs4.75 per unit on Wednesday.

Senator Fida Mohammad Khan chaired the meeting of Senate’s sub-committee on power division to review the overall situation of electricity in the country.

Senator Nauman Wazir Khattak told the meeting that Lakhra coal power plant could be restarted by a coast of just Rs30 million. He said that restarting of Lakhra coal power plant was in the Pakistan’s national interest.

He asked the body to seek details of capacity money paid to IPPs from the power division. Nauman Wazir said that power division had failed to stop power theft. He demanded to produce the names of those officials involved in power theft.

While Senate’s sub-committee on power  Chairman Fida Mohammad Khan expressed displeasure over power theft and the performance of the officials of power division.

Earlier, the Senate standing committee on power had been told on January 15 that Industrialist-cum-banker Mian Muhammad Mansha’s Nishat Power was taking 32 per cent profit, however other independent power producers were allowed to take 17 per cent profit,

The additional secretary power had told the Senate body that the government was paying capacity charges to 41 private power plants. He said that no capacity charges were paid to Reshma power plant.

The Senate committee meeting chaired by Senator Fida Muhammad had sought National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) over providing excessive benefits and profits to Reshma power plant.
