Last nationwide anti-polio drive of 2016 kicks off

KARACHI: Amid tight security arrangements in the country, the last polio vaccination campaign of the current year kicked off on Monday.

During the six-day anti-polio drive, at least 1.5 million children will also be administered Vitamin-A drops in Karachi only, said official sources.

Meanwhile, in the province of Punjab, the polio vaccination campaign will continue for the next three days during which 18.4 million children will administer polio vaccination and Vitamin-A drops.

In Balochistan, at least 2.451 million children will get polio vaccination and Vitamin-A drops across the province, officials confirmed.

On the other hand in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (PK) province, another 5.64 million children will administer polio vaccination and Vitamin-A drops during a three-day campaign.

Officials also clarified that if anyone refused the polio vaccination and Vitamin-A drops to children, under the age of five, in their families, they will be dealt accordingly and as per the law.

Angela Kearney, the country representative UNICEF in Pakistan, had earlier claimed that with a coordinated approach of the world organisations and the Pakistani government, polio would be eradicated from the country by the end of 2016

According to Angela Kearny, in 2014 there were only 309 polio cases in Pakistan but the number significantly reduced to 17 in 2016.
