LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday accepted the written apology of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) stalwart Ahsan Iqbal in a contempt of court case.

LHC announced to dispose of the contempt case proceeding as it resumed the hearing against the former interior minister today.

During the hearing, the high court hoped that the institutions will be given their due respect in future.

While talking to media, Ahsan stressed that harmony is mandatory between all institutions for Pakistan to prosper. “If judiciary is weak, then every victim will suffer,” he added.

In his customary criticism against the ruling party, PML-N leader remarked that the new government only knows “how to plead for funds”. In PML-N tenure, he said “we generated 1200 megawatt electricity but did not ask for donations from anyone.”

During previous case hearings, the counsel of Ahsan Iqbal had maintained before the court that his client didn’t commit contempt of court; it was rather a complaint in response to Chief Justice’s remarks about his [Ahsan’s] role in appointing a woman vice-chancellor to a university.

However, on July 2, the accused offered an unconditional apology, before the LHC, over his alleged contemptuous remarks against the judiciary and requested that the contempt case against him be quashed.

His apology came on the heels of conviction of PML-N leader and former minister Daniyal Aziz by the Supreme Court in a similar case.

The top court sentenced Daniyal Aziz till the rising of the court for maligning the judiciary.
