LHC grants bail to former vice chancellor Prof Mujahid Kamran

LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday granted bail to former vice chancellor of Punjab University Prof. Mujahid Kamran, ARY News reported.

The bench also approved the bail petitions of co-accused in the case Prof. Kamran Zahid, Dr Liaquat and Amin Athar.

The court ordered release of all arrested teachers and officials of Punjab University after they deposit  Rs. 0.5 mln cash bond each.

Arrest of Dr. Mujahid Kamran

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested Dr. Mujahid Kamran on charges of irregularities during his tenure in Punjab University.

The anti-graft watchdog apprehended Prof Kamran on October 12, after he appeared before the Lahore office of the NAB to record his statement.

The former VC was alleged for carrying out massive irregularities during his tenure at the varsity.

Among a number of improprieties, Prof. Kamran was charged of granting approval for several hirings across the university in violation of the rules.

He is also accused of being involved in the unlawful appointment of his wife Shazia Qureshi as the principal of Punjab University Law College.

Awarding scholarships to students on the basis of nepotism, as well as giving contracts to his preferred contractors in violation of the laws are the other allegations against the educationist.

Other accused in the case are Dr. Liaquat, Dr. Aurangzaib, Dr. Raas Masood, Dr. Kamran Zahid and Amin Athar.
