LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Monday issued notices to Pakistan International Airlines’ (PIA) chief operating officer and director legal to respond to a petition against contractual appointments in the airline on hefty salaries.

Justice Sajid Mahmood Sethi of the high court was hearing a petition filed by Nasir Mir, a member of the national carrier’s legal team, who approached it against alleged illegal appointments in the airline.

He submitted that of late many appointments were made in the PIA on key posts in violation of the relevant laws. Blue-eyed persons were appointed on contractual basis, he alleged, adding that the appointments were made on hefty pay packages, despite the fact that the airline was already facing acute financial crunch.

Citing the case of the chief commercial officer of PIA who he said was appointed on a salary of Rs2 million on contractual basis, he said the permanent employees of the airline were being given meager salaries while the contractual appointees receiving hefty salaries.

He also pleaded to the court to declare the contractual appointments in PIA as illegal.
