LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) ordered release of the notorious character of Model Town incident Gullu Butt, when he was caught vandalizing vehicles and property in 2014, ARY News reported.

Gullu Butt, whose real name is Shahid Nazeer, shot to prominence when he was captured live by TV channels smashing public property during a clash between Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) activists and police in Model Town on June 17, 2014 that claimed over 20 lives, most of them the PAT members.

Gullu Butt’s counsel, in the hearing, said that the anti-terrorism court had announced a 11-year old imprisonment sentence against his client which was in excess of his actual punishment term.

The lawyer also said that terrorism and attempt to murder charges were filed later against his client.

He added that the actions of his client do not fall under terrorism.

Butt’s lawyer pleaded, “The verdict of the anti-terror court violates the law therefore the court should declare it void.”

The prosecutor, in his arguments, said that fear and panic had spread across the country by his actions therefore the punishment, given by the anti-terror court was according to the law.

The bench declared the charges against him void and ordered his release.

He led the police team in vandalizing the property around Model Town.

A bench of Lahore High Court heard Gullu Butt’s appeal against the punishment handed to him by Anti Terrorism Court.

An anti-terrorism court handed out 11-year imprisonment and imposed a Rs. 1,00,000 fine on him whereas terrorism charges were also filed against him.
