LHC seeks details of water policy, World Bank report

LAHORE: A bench of Lahore High Court (LHC) while hearing a petition seeking formation of a water commission to secure underground water in the country, on Friday sought details of the water policy and the related report of the World Bank.

Justice Jawad Hassan of the LHC heard a petition, which said that the government has failed to take steps for saving water in Pakistan.

The service stations at petrol pumps are not being regularized. The government has failed to devise a policy to secure the water, the petition said.

The petitioner pleaded to the court to order the government for constitution of the water commission to save the water.

After arguments of lawyers, the bench summoned implementation report on the water policy and concerned report of the World Bank.

In a previous hearing of the case, the bench also issued orders for submission of the record of the Supreme Court decisions on the water related issues.

The bench called the matter as key to the survival of the country and its coming generations.

The court was informed in previous hering that according to a World Bank report Pakistan loses the water of around estimated value of 12 billion dollars’ every year.

The report included recommendations to secure the precious water and improve the related administrative matters in the country, the petitioner said.

The petition sought the court order for security of water and steps to supply clean water to the citizens.
