Root helps England beat South Africa in high-scoring World T20 fixture

England won the toss and chose to field first in the match. The South African side posted a mammoth total of 229/4 in their 20 overs with Quinton de Kock, Hashim Amla and J.P. Duminy scoring half centuries.

Hashim Amla was the top scorer for South Africa as he made 58 runs from 31 balls with seven fours and three sixes.

J.P. Duminy made scored 54 runs from 28 balls with three fours and three sixes to his name.

Amla’s opening partner Quinton de Kock contributed 52 runs from the bat with seven boundaries and three maximums.

English bowlers were hit to all parts of the ground by the Proteas batsmen. Moeen Ali conceded 34 runs in four overs and grabbed two wickets.

David Willey went for 40 runs in four overs and took a wicket while Adil Rashid took a wicket and gave 35 runs in his four overs.

Reece Topley went for 33 runs in his two wickets.

England, chasing 230 runs to win, reached the target with two wickets and two balls to spare.

Joe Root was the stand out player for the English side as his 83-run knoch helped his side reached the mammoth total. He scored six boundaries and four sixes in the innings.

Opener Jason Roy pummelled South African bowlers early in the innings as he made 43 runs from just 16 deliveries with five fours and three maximums.

Joe Buttler, Alex Hales and Ben Stokes contributed 21, 17 and 15 runs respectively for the side.

Proteas pacer Kyle Abbott grabbed three wickets while Kagiso Rabada dismissed two English batsmen.

Spinners Imran Tahir and J.P. Duminy took a wicket each.
