Malinga's 5-wicket left Pakistan 12 runs short
FATAULLAH: Sri Lanka has defeated Pakistan by 12 runs in the opening game of Asia Cup, played at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium, Fatullah on Tuedsay, ARY News reported.
Sri Lankan seamer Lasith Malinga has turnaround the game with last five wickets.
Malinga remained wicketless for first seven overs but in his last 14 balls he eviscerated Pakistan.
Skipper Misbah-ul-Haq and Umar Akmal laid the strong foundation with the partnership of 121 runs. Both the batsmen looked set to win this by a canter.
Akmal’s dismissal was the turning point of the game. He backed to pavilion after scoring 74 runs. Misbah scored 73 runs.
Malinga finished his figures with 5-wicket haul conceding 52 runs.
Earlier, Sri Lanka batting posted 296 runs on board.
Lahiru Thirimanne and Kumar Sagakkara set the momentum for Sri Lanka with 161-run partnership overcoming a stuttering beginning.
Lahiru Thirimanne re-asserted his talent and temperament by easing to a second ODI century. He scored 102 runs hitting 11 fours and a six. Kumar Sangakkara was dismissed by Umar Gul after scoring 67 runs.
Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Matthews played a wonderful knock of unbeaten 55 runs that came off in 50 balls.
Umar Gul and Shahid Khan Afridi took two wickets each.
