KARACHI: The family of man who was severely torturing by several shopkeepers for allegedly stealing a mobile phone have filed a complaint against his death and called for legal action.

The incident occurred yesterday in the Cantt Station area when a man, Ghulam Sarwar, was apprehended and severely thrashed on suspicion of stealing a mobile phone.

The man was eventually handed over to the police who allegedly subjected him to further torture and he eventually lost his life in police custody.

According to the shopkeepers, Sarwar had fled after stealing their mobile phone a few days ago, and yesterday they spotted him in the market and caught him.

Police denied any claims of torture and said the suspect had died when he was been shifted to the police station. Sarwar’s family had returned the mobile phone to the shopkeepers, while police had arrested two people when they received a complaint on Sunday morning.

The suspect’s son, Ahmed Faraz, denied all allegations against his father. He said the shopkeepers nabbed his father at around 3PM and thrashed him. He said the mobile phone may have been swapped inadvertently during recharge.

He also claimed that his father was alive when he was transferred to the police station and passed away late at night. The son appealed to the relevant authorities to provide justice to their family.
